Image based
This is the most used on it is simple. This photo contains one person or not people. The person in the photo can be looking anywhere making any face. Most celebrities go with this type of photo. This doesn't only work with people it go along with food, landscapes, animals, etc. But the nature of the photography has to go along with the style of publication.
Illustration based
This one is pretty simple to explain. Instead of using a camera all you need is a pencil and paper...maybe some artistic skills. But people use to this for the cover of magazine people still do mostly independent publish magazines. it might take more time since you have to do it manually but it looks more creative in my opinion.
Typed based
To me this one is the easiest. to draw peoples attention to your typed cover is by doing different fonts and designs. this wouldn't be my first option just because i see it as boring and id rather see more detail. It says that the can present it better but i go by a picture has a thousand words.
Concept based
This type of cover has to almost immediately be understood by the readers and you might want to make it funny for them. this is a little bit of each of the ones i explained earlier. This type is not seen often.
